This week we’re profiling the American Red Cross. Are they in your Givolio?
The American Red Cross responds to an emergency every 8 minutes, and over 65,000 disasters a year. From house fires to multi-state natural disasters, the Red Cross is there to assist those in need. They work to prevent and alleviate pain and suffering through disaster relief, supporting America’s military families, donating blood, health and safety services, and international services.
When Hurricane Sandy struck, the Red Cross responded with their largest U.S. response team in 5 years. The team included more than 17,000 workers, 90 percent of them volunteers. 7 million relief items and over 17 million meals were provided to victims of the hurricane. To this day the American Red Cross works with nonprofit partners to create recovery grants for those affected by the storm. They are currently at $95.2 million in assistance grants.
90 percent of the disasters that the Red Cross responds to are home fires. On average, 7 people die from a home fire every day. In order to reduce this amount the American Red Cross and its partners have launched a campaign to reduce home fires, which are America’s biggest disaster threat. They encourage people a 2 minute drill, making sure families can leave their home in under 2 minutes. As well, encouraging families to test their smoke alarms monthly to ensure they are in good working condition.
