This week we’re highlighting Greenpeace USA. Are they in your Givolio?
Greenpeace is the leading independent campaigning organization that uses peaceful protest and creative communication to expose global environmental problems and its mission is to promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future. By working together, members hope to stop the destruction of the environment with peaceful direct action and communication. There are 250,000 members in the United States, and 2.8 million members worldwide that provide virtually all funding through individual donations.
The organization was started in 1971 a group of citizens came together to create Greenpeace. Determined activists, they set sail to Alaska with the mission to protest US nuclear testing off the coast by placing themselves in harm’s way. Though they were stopped by the Coast Guard, these activists brought worldwide attention to the dangers of nuclear testing. As a result over time activists and supporters have come together to ban commercial whaling, protect Antarctica and convince world leaders to stop nuclear testing.
Greenpeace challenges the systems of power and privilege that destroy the environment and place disproportionate, burdens on vulnerable communities. As illustrated by nature, diversity is essential to life on the planet and success in the organization. They welcome, value and rely on a diversity of people, cultural experiences and perspectives. They learn from one another. Through their campaigning, they have created solutions that promote environmental sustainability rooted in social justice.
