MiraVia, Latin for “The Miraculous Way”, is a Catholic non-profit organization that provides housing, resources, and services to young or single mothers in the Charlotte, North Carolina area. The organization helps young women plan and care for their child, and assists them in planning an independent life after their stay at MiraVia.
Established in March of 1994, MiraVia became a safe place for 12 residential clients annually and over 400 young women through their Outreach program annually. During their pregnancy, young women, averaging 20 years of age, seek help from MiraVia.
When it first opened, MiraVia was known as the Room at the Inn, a name inspired by the story of Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem. The organization offered counseling services to young mothers who were a part of the residential program. In 2003, the organization grew and added office building to its existing campus, therefore providing more room to serve young mothers. As Room at the Inn expanded again in 2011, the organization collaborated with Belmont Abbey College, who provided them buildings for housing. Finally, in October of 2013, The Room at the Inn changed its name to MiraVia after discovering that 30 additional maternity homes across the nation had the same name.
Since its conception in 1994, MiraVia has served more than 6,000 young women.
Assistant Director at MiraVia, Debbie Capen explained why maternity homes for young women are needed. “A small group of concerned people in Charlotte saw the need to provide housing to pregnant women in need. Inspired by their faith, they worked to create a safe and nurturing home that would serve pregnant women who had nowhere else to go.”
MiraVia hopes to show women that there are many resources available to them. ‘Women choose MiraVia because it is a positive choice that allows them to have the best possible outcome,” Capen said.
